Dumbo » In Brooklyn, NY

dumbo1135 Plymouth is proud of our neighborhood, DUMBO, an acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. There are two sections, one between the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridge which connects to the east river, and another that continues east from the Manhattan Bridge to Vinegar Hill.

The founding of the neighborhood began in the 1890s and many came to this area by ferry. It was a bustling manufacturing district, creating machines, paper boxes, and cleaning supplies. In the late 70s, the inexpensive living spaces available made it popular for young adults and the acronym was created to deter overpopulation. Today, this section of Brooklyn is the city’s 90th historic district.

Interesting places in the DUMBO neighborhood include art galleries, St. Ann’s Warehouse, a chocolate factory, and The River Café. It has also developed into a technology hub. The neighborhood has received many media references including Jerry Seinfeld, Grand Theft Auto IV, Gossip Girl, and Law and Order.
